3 out of 5 stars Same   August 10, 2008
I've read several of Keyes' books, the first being Anybody Out There. I loved that book and craved more of her humour, so I went out and bought a handful of her books. I was not impressed! They start of great, with humourous characters and potentialy brilliant plots, but after having read three or four you begin to see her lack of imagination. I have read at least three of her books which are based around the same family. Five sisters, the youngest Helen, next Anna, so on and so on. Her pace of writing is unsettling and confusing, and she can easily loose you mid-sentance.
She has such potential, and if you have never read a Keyes before then you should.. just don't read more than three.I would recomend Anybody Out There, The Other Side Of The Story and Watermelon.

1 out of 5 stars really bad   August 4, 2008

This isn't a 'funny' book, its about differnet addictions: i.e. alcohol, drugs, violence, childhood. I read half of it and then thought, I don't really want to know how to tackle different addictions, I just wanted a light hearted read.

5 out of 5 stars Another Amazing Marian Masterpiece   July 25, 2008
absolutely fantastic. have read most of marian's other novels and every time i finish one i say that was the best so far. they are utterly amazing and rachels holiday just carries on that legacy. truly heartfelt read, amazing written and researched. broke my heart at the end of this novel as i do at some point with all of marian's books. it was truly perfect and i would recommend it for anyone! i love the story of all the walsh girls and really want one for helen!
marian is a legend and will appeal to everyone.
amazing!

3 out of 5 stars Repetitive and sloooooooooooooooooooow.   July 17, 2008

This is the first Marian Keyes book I have read and picked it due to the great reviews. I didn't find the book as enjoyable as a lot of people.

The story was slow to develop and rather repetitive. I don't think it needed the 500 pages plus and could have been told in half that. There are a few dozen characters, many of whom were potentially interesting but were not developed so you never really got to understand anyone except the protagonist, Rachel.

I thought the story was completely predictable and at times I was completely frustrated by the lack of action/plot. I thought the writing was humorous in places but mostly in the Christmas cracker joke/grimace way rather than laugh out loud.

I'm not sure I would read another book by the same author.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant, fantastic, wonderful, funny, interesting and very realistic. !!!   July 3, 2008
I cannot tell how much I enjoyed this book, I have forced many people to read it as a self - help book as it makes a lot of sense and says all the right things, the main character "Rachel" is the best of all Keyes books, perhapes that is because there is a lot of Marian's own experience written into the story, it made me laugh and it made me think about how completely unaware we can all be about what we are doing and the consequences of our own actions, I read this book in 2 days, it would have been quicker if I had been able to take the day off work to read it which I did think about doing as I loved this book soooooooooooo much right from the first couple of pages .
