Gardens, cookery and magic October 13, 2008 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
If you don't believe magic is possible then don't read this book. Claire Waverley lives alone in the family house with its mysterious garden which blooms all the year round and an apple tree which is definitely not what it seems. Everything is peaceful and calm just how she likes it until several events serve to disrupt her routine. A new neighbour moves in next door and her estranged sister returns to the house. Claire's life will never be the same again. I half expected the book to be too sweet and cloying but it wasn't. There was just a hint of acid in it to prevent it being too much like eating a whole box of chocolates in one sitting. It is an easy read and a charming one and if you like Christina Jones then you will possibly like this as well.
magical stories September 16, 2008 I loved the feel good happy ending vibe of this book, I read it in one sitting and couldn't put it down!! It is exactly what it appears to be, no masquerading or posturing, just a lovely happy love story.
It reminded me of the Trigiani books and the whole north Carolina , Dawson's Creek, Rebecca Wells genre. Happy chick lit! I already imagine the movie...... can't wait for her next novel.
Garden Spells.... September 12, 2008
I really enjoyed getting lost in this book. Started reading yesterday, got stuck in whilst my car was woefully failing it's MOT this morning, read it whilst I ate lunch, came home, settled on the sofa & read& read until the story came to it's end tonight. In fairness the storyline is very similar to the plot of the film Practical Magic but I like that film & it was different enough to be thoroughly enjoyable. Spellbinding reading.
Simple yet Enchanting September 6, 2008 This is an enchanting story which does manage to weave its way into your imagination and heart. It draws in a number of characters around the central female protagonist Claire, for whom a quiet life of soiltude and garden magic has always been enough. Until one day, some unexpected characters pop into her life, turning it upside down but the right way round! I found a simple pleasure in reading this book, though it lacks any real literary finesse or complexity, it is perfect for quick comfort read. Anyone who is a fan of the film Practical Magic will enjoy this, however, may also find themselves begrudging the sometimes blatant similarity between stories.
Perfect holiday/rainy day reading September 6, 2008 I love love LOVED this book. It scratched an itch I've had ever since reading "Practical Magic" - where I loved the premise but never quite felt satisfied with the actual novel. This is a similar story - two magical sisters in a small town, one of them stable, one of them willful, an abusive ex-partner, etc. However, it's totally original, and is more about magical realism than hocus pocus. It was really charming and satisfying, and I'll be recommending it to anyone who will listen!
