Insightful, practical and a 'must have' for anyone interested in gardening, raising vegetables or ecology in the broadest sense March 14, 2007 3 out of 4 found this review helpful
Fukuoka is a rare blend of farmer, philosopher and agricultural scientist. Over a period of seventy odd years, Fukuoka has effectively challenged 'received wisdom' about agriculture and cultivation and has mounted what is probably one of the most cogent intellectual attacks on agribusiness and the ways in which it is destroying our diet, the basis of our societies and the ecology of our planet. Ranging over chapters covering the shortcomings of modern science, the dislocation of people from the food they eat and the vicious circle that these practices engender, Fukuoka devotes the majority of this book to solid practical advice to farmers and growers.
The graphic results of his philosophy of 'no weeding, no tilling, no fertilizer and no pesticides' make for staggering reading and reveal the astonishing myths attached to cultivation that are quite literally stuffed down our throats by the agribusiness economy. This book should be on every gardeners bookshelf
