Dissapointing November 27, 2005 23 out of 23 found this review helpful
I have to agree with Chris. I am a Bonzo fanatic and have been waiting forever for something like this to come out. Truly dissapointing with most of the best material left out, makes the bonzo's look like an un-important whimsical load of rubbish. This is a true hatchet job and I can't wait for the definitive Bonzo documentary. It's only worth getting for the priceless interviews with Neil, Roger,Rodney etc. Much better off watching the Viv documentary from some time ago. It looks to me like the bonzo doc suffered from copyright problems thus only allowing them to show a very limited and exremely grainy footage of the band. I'm grateful that someone's bothered to put it out but it is so so so so dissapointing. Boo Hoo Boo.

I bought this on the strength of an interview I heard on Radio Two with Neil Innes, I think it was Johnathon Ross/Mark Lamarr. Neil Innes actually said during the interview this DVD was coming out so being a bit of an aged fan I looked out for it. And quite frankly I think its very good, given the age of the content. There's some of the better known stuff and details about the band that I had never known, so I found it very informative. I must confess I do like the format of this DVD where you get the views of others. I suppose everyone has their views and that if yours is different then you may well not like what you see. However as long as the views are balanced, which I think they are, then I don't see a problem My mate saw it as well and said he was going to get a copy. Well worth the money for any fan.
Abysmal August 24, 2005 56 out of 57 found this review helpful
There's a great documentary to be made about the Bonzos, the only band to successfully blend comedy and rock music, but this emphatically is not it. True, you get to see some rare footage, especially their little known TV debut on New Faces introduced by a somewhat bemused Max Bygraves. And you get to see Neil Innes, Roger Ruskin Spear and Rodney Slater (no Legs Larry)reminiscing - pretty incoherently and insight-free as far as Roger and Rodney are concerned. But that's about it. Otherwise, you are treated to the expert analysis of a couple of ageing music journalists, a DJ from Total Rock Radio (what?) who probably wasn't even born when the Bonzos split up, and someone from Classic Rock who's probably never met them. Otherwise, you get a lot of random footage from old silent movies, still photographs, and the occasional bit of film felt to be vaguely relevant to the track that's playing (eg My Pink Half of The Drainpipe is accompanied by shots of terraced houses). When there is a decent piece of promotional film to be seen, as with The Intro and The Outro or The Equestrian Statue, some twerp thought it would be really craaaazy to fit it into a wacky graphic half the size of the screen, so you can hardly see what's happening. There's only the occasional reference to Do Not Adjust Your Set, extensive recordings of which have just been released, while the clips of Viv in One Man's Week come from four years after the band split up. And then there are the ceaseless captions that solemnly inform you on which album this "original studio sound recording" first appeared and who produced it, and who owns the copyright of the clip you're trying to see behind this stupid graphic and all the bloody print covering half the screen ... Aaaargh! And believe it or not, you Classic Rock chaps, a DVD can accommodate a damn sight more than 62 minutes, which makes it all the more shocking that no one mentioned Viv's masterpiece - debuted on Let's Make Up and Be Friendly - Sir Henry At Rawlinson End. Now will someone do the job properly, please.
What? A review based on not watching this DVD? August 18, 2005 11 out of 32 found this review helpful
My five stars is based on what I hope will be a splendid viewing experience. What I cannot fathom is how the above reviewer has seen it and commented on it while it has not been released yet. Is this another bogus review we see that has been cooked up by the publishers, or have they seen an advance copy? Amazon customers would naturally appreciate clarification.
Great To See The Guys Again August 16, 2005 1 out of 24 found this review helpful
Me and the wife have just finished watching the Inside The Bonzo's DVD, and I must say it is fantastic. Being of a slighty more mature age I remember these guys the first time round but still some years later they still put a smile on my face. Hearing from the likes of Neil and Roger brings back fond memories and some of the insights they give you is fascinating. Fantastic DVD and I would highly recommend people to purchase it.
