Pioneering underwater photography May 6, 2008 The quality of the sumptuous wideangle cinematography, both above and below the surface, has stood the test of time, despite being locked in a distributor's vault for 30 years. The shot of Sperm Whale carcasses being carried behind a locomotive is memorable. Stan Waterman is still fit and well. I was diving with him in Fiji last month, one week after his 85th birthday. His hunger for the oceans and a good cine shot is undiminished
Killer! March 8, 2008 Beautiful clear DVD transfer of this long out-of-print movie. Times have moved on and the graphic whaling sequences (and the folk-singing) may make you queasy, but the dive photography is beautiful.
Fantastic November 24, 2007 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This film, covered many months and oceans of work to find what at the time was the realitvely unknown Great White Shark. To read about the story of Blue Water, White Death, I would recommend reading Sea Salt by Stan Waterman. It is also interesting to look back at the 'evolution' of diving some 36 years ago. How we have progressed with the equipment and attitude. A fantastic film.
A Real Shark Film September 12, 2007 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I saw this film as a B movie back in 1971. It is a documentary about a group of people searching for a Great White shark. Equipped with film cameras and safety cages, they attempt to attract sharks by hanging animal carcasses over the side of the ship!
For most of the file they are unsuccessful, but eventually a Great White does turn up...... it's hungry and annoyed. By comparison, it makes the Jaws films look like something out of the kiddies pool. Don't expect a fast paced action film, it is anything but. You will learn a lot about sharks though, and when the star eventually turns up you will be amazed by the sheer strength, power and agression of these magnificent animals.
